VISUAL SYSTEM 2
A SOFIA COPPOLA FILM FESTIVAL
To create a visual system for a Sofia Coppola film festival that will take place in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, California in May 2029. The focus was to capture the essence of Sofia’s films that are heavy with themes of isolation from the outside world, a deep sense of questioning and confusion in the mundane of everyday life with a strong reference to fleeting moments. An importance is placed on finding a balance between Sofia’s demure, subtle and quiet approach and the glamor and spontaneity of the films she has directed.
The visual development of the system is based on a guiding narrative, placing myself in the shoes of a 19-year-old girl who feels lost and confused; she finds herself alone in a foreign cosmopolitan city where she explores new places and meets new temporary faces, sending her to find meaning while she is mapping out her life through the experiences of navigating through a new city. Therefore, I adopted the travel vernacular of the NYC transit system, and developed it into a system; using wayfinding icons and creating a graphic element called ‘The Dots’ which is based on the Inside Line Map of the 1970 NYMTA Graphic Standards Manual to spell out the festival name ‘In Brief’ using the brail system.
